Summary
Google Summer of Code students are submitting applications. This is the final week for submission. We have 3 Opticks submissions so far and expect at least one more. Details about the process were discussed. In short, once applications are in, all OSGeo students are ranked then Google assigns a number of slots to OSGeo. There is no set process within OSGeo regarding deconfliction. This will likely occur on a mailing list or in IRC when we reach that point.
The 4.7.0 release and 1.4.0 extras releases are scheduled for 11May. Links to details can be found in the logs.

2011-04-04T14:03:50 <tclarke> if I don't hear anything by the end of the meeting, I'll consider them accepted
2011-04-04T14:04:02 <tclarke> the first item is OSGeo incubation
2011-04-04T14:04:07 <kstreith> osgeo incubation ticket: http://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ticket/666
2011-04-04T14:05:05 <tclarke> while not directly related, GSoC has given us more visibility re: our incubation, which is good
2011-04-04T14:05:15 <pratikone> here
2011-04-04T14:05:21 <tclarke> we've had additional inquiries and interaction with other members of the OSGeo group
2011-04-04T14:05:33 <tclarke> I don't believe there are any procedural updates since last time
2011-04-04T14:05:40 <kstreith> that is correct
2011-04-04T14:05:43 <tclarke> if that's all, we'll move on to the next item
2011-04-04T14:05:52 <tclarke> Google Summer of Code...
2011-04-04T14:06:12 <tclarke> we're in the final week of the student application period...we've had interest from a number of students
2011-04-04T14:06:25 <tclarke> there are 3 official applications in the system and I'm expecting at least one additional
2011-04-04T14:06:26 <kstreith> 3 official applications for Opticks
2011-04-04T14:06:34 <kstreith> yes, what tclarke said
2011-04-04T14:07:20 <tclarke> I'm quite impressed with the quality of the proposals so far
2011-04-04T14:07:33 <tclarke> it's going to be difficult to rank students this year..
2011-04-04T14:07:52 <kstreith> we have two mentors for Opticks
2011-04-04T14:07:53 <tclarke> kstreith: do you know when the aceepted students will be announced?
2011-04-04T14:08:10 <tclarke> I believe it's the last Monday of April
2011-04-04T14:08:10 <kstreith> so I'm not anticipating more than 2 students being selected for Opticks
2011-04-04T14:08:48 <kstreith> April 25th
2011-04-04T14:09:13 <kstreith> there are currently 9 applications in for the OSGeo Foundation as a whole
2011-04-04T14:09:45 <tclarke> any further announcements or discussion for GSoC?
2011-04-04T14:10:02 <kstreith> I have also been impressed with the quality of the applications this year
2011-04-04T14:10:07 <kstreith> .
2011-04-04T14:10:17 <tclarke> ok...open discussion time
2011-04-04T14:10:19 <Yiwei> So still two slots for Opticks this year?
2011-04-04T14:10:29 <tclarke> yiwei: we don't know how many slots
2011-04-04T14:10:31 <kstreith> nothing is for certain at this point in the process
2011-04-04T14:10:45 <tclarke> after the application period, OSGeo will rank all the students for all member projects
2011-04-04T14:10:57 <tclarke> then Google assigns a number of slots for the organisation
2011-04-04T14:11:03 <kstreith> it's only after students have applied that mentoring orgs put in their requests for the number of slots they wish to have
2011-04-04T14:11:08 <pratikone> and why would be criterion of student selection ?
2011-04-04T14:11:26 <kstreith> and then Google officially allocates slots
2011-04-04T14:11:44 <pratikone> *what
2011-04-04T14:11:55 <tclarke> generally, the quality and applicability of the proposal...the availability of an appropriate mentor...
2011-04-04T14:12:06 <tclarke> all of this in comparison to all applications for the organization
2011-04-04T14:12:33 <kstreith> between April 8th-April 22nd, we may contact students for additional information
2011-04-04T14:12:45 <kstreith> clarification, etc.
2011-04-04T14:13:16 <kstreith> last year, tclarke and I provided feedback to every application, even those students that were not selected
2011-04-04T14:13:27 <tclarke> there's no published guidelines for OSGeo at this point so I can't give you exact criteria
2011-04-04T14:14:50 <tclarke> ok, anything else on GSoC at this time?
2011-04-04T14:15:27 <tclarke> ok...on to open discussion
2011-04-04T14:15:44 <pratikone> ok, does experience play a major role? just for an example, Yiwei has worked in last year GSoC. So, no matter how much effort I put in, he has better experience of Opticks API as he has worked on it earlier
2011-04-04T14:15:44 <tclarke> the 4.7.0 release is currently scheduled for 10May
2011-04-04T14:16:45 <tclarke> pratikone: it does to a degree...someone who worked GSoC with us last year is a known quantity...we can better judge the quality of their schedule, etc....other than that, we don't plan to give preferential treatment to previous GSoC students
2011-04-04T14:17:30 <tclarke> Information on 4.7.0 and the issues which will be implemented can be found here: https://issues.ballforge.net/jira/browse/OPTICKS/fixforversion/10603
2011-04-04T14:18:02 <tclarke> associated info for the opticks extras 1.4.0 releases are here:
2011-04-04T14:18:04 <tclarke> https://issues.ballforge.net/jira/browse/EXTRAS/fixforversion/10620
2011-04-04T14:18:06 <kstreith> pratikone: it's hard to say at this point, we will be arguing for slots within the OSGeo organization
2011-04-04T14:18:08 <tclarke> https://issues.ballforge.net/jira/browse/EXTRAS/fixforversion/10621
2011-04-04T14:18:12 <tclarke> https://issues.ballforge.net/jira/browse/EXTRAS/fixforversion/10605
2011-04-04T14:18:29 <kstreith> it's entirely possible that previous GSoc experience may prove to be a disadvantage
2011-04-04T14:18:50 <kstreith> put together the best proposal you can and the rest should take of itself
2011-04-04T14:19:30 <tclarke> ok...I'm finished with all my announcements...I'll leave the meeting open for a few more minutes in case there are additional GSoC questions/discussions
2011-04-04T14:21:04 <tclarke> ok, I'll close the meeting now...feel free to continue discussions as needed
2011-04-04T14:21:15 <tclarke> watch the mailing list for notes and the next meeting's agenda
2011-04-04T14:21:19 <tclarke> the next meeting is in two weeks
2011-04-04T14:21:22 <tclarke> thanks for attending
2011-04-04T14:21:25 <tclarke> meeting closed
